Why You Still Need a Professional Headshot (Even in 2024)
You might be asking, “Are headshots still important?”

After all, it’s 2024, and most of us have a camera in our pockets that’s more powerful than anything we’ve ever owned. But the answer is a big yes.

At our recent Hops & Headshots after-hours event with the Cleveland BBB, we offered free professional headshots to attendees. With the help of member-sponsor New Image Media, we shot and edited 75 headshots that evening. The turnout alone shows how much people still value that polished, professional image.

Here’s why you should consider getting a new or updated headshot:

First Impressions Count

Whether it’s on LinkedIn, your company’s website, or even a Zoom call, people form opinions about you based on your photo. A high-quality, professional headshot makes you look approachable, competent, and serious about your work. Studies show that people make snap judgments within a fraction of a second based on visual cues. A professional headshot can be the difference between someone engaging with your profile or passing you by.

Keeps You Current

Your headshot should reflect who you are today. If your photo is more than a few years old, or you’ve changed your look, it’s time for an update. People want to see the real you, not the 2015 version of you. An outdated photo can lead to awkward moments when meeting clients or colleagues who don’t recognize you. Updating your headshot is a simple way to show that you’re evolving and staying up to date in your career, just like your skills and expertise.

It’s Not Just for LinkedIn

Think beyond social media. A great headshot is useful for your website bio, speaking engagements, press releases, and even business cards. Plus, your chamber membership profile should always look its best! It’s also a great asset for marketing materials, blog posts, or company newsletters, where putting a face to a name adds a personal touch. A professional photo gives you flexibility—whether you’re submitting for a media feature or updating your portfolio, it shows you’re ready for any opportunity.

Professionalism Matters

Sure, your iPhone takes great photos, but there’s something about a professionally lit and edited image that just pops. The right photo communicates attention to detail and care for your personal brand. A professional photographer knows how to highlight your best features while ensuring the image aligns with your industry’s standards. Investing in a quality headshot shows that you’re willing to go the extra mile, and that attention to detail reflects on your business as well.

When it comes to headshots, one size does not fit all.

The style and pose of your headshot should reflect both your personality and the industry you’re in. Here are a few styles to consider, and why you might choose each one:

Traditional Corporate

This style features a straight-on shot with a neutral background, usually in formal business attire. It’s perfect for industries like finance, law, or any field where professionalism and formality are key. The direct pose communicates confidence and reliability, and the neutral background keeps the focus on you.

Creative and Casual

For industries like marketing, tech, or design, a more relaxed pose in a less formal outfit can showcase your creative side. You might lean against a wall, sit casually, or smile with a more natural, candid expression. This style works well in creative fields where personality and approachability are essential. The background could be more colorful or include an outdoor setting to reflect creativity.

Environmental or Workplace

An environmental headshot shows you in your work setting, such as in your office or studio. It’s a great option for professionals who want to give a glimpse of their work environment, such as consultants, entrepreneurs, or creatives. This type of shot helps tell a story about what you do and adds context that can make the image more relatable and engaging.

Friendly and Approachable

A headshot with a slight tilt of the body and a genuine smile creates a warm and inviting impression. This is perfect for customer-facing roles, service industries, or any profession where building trust quickly is important. The body language in this style conveys openness and approachability, encouraging potential clients or partners to feel more connected to you.

Bold and Dynamic

If you want to stand out, consider a headshot with a more dynamic pose or bold colors. This style works well for entrepreneurs, public speakers, or anyone looking to make a memorable impression. A dynamic pose or an action shot can highlight your energy and passion, giving the photo a more impactful feel.

Choosing the right style depends on your profession, the message you want to convey, and where you plan to use the headshot. A professional photographer can help you choose the perfect pose and setting to match your brand.

So, if you missed our recent event or it’s been a while since your last headshot, it’s time to consider investing in a fresh one. Your headshot is often your first hello to the world—make sure it’s saying what you want.
