Maple Heights Mayor Encourages New Business Growth
Maple Heights Mayor: A City Full of Opportunity for Entrepreneurs
At the September 23rd Maple Heights Small Business Forum, hosted by the SBA and the City of Maple Heights, Mayor Annette Blackwell called on entrepreneurs to seize opportunities in her city.
Mayor Blackwell highlighted that Maple Heights, with its 25,000 residents and growing housing base, is the largest market in the southeast suburbs. Yet, she noted, the community still lacks many everyday businesses — such as an ice cream shop, coffee shop, wine shop, antique store, or primary care office.
“There are some business opportunities that are untapped,” she told attendees, encouraging them to consider ventures that fill these gaps rather than duplicating what already exists nearby. She also pointed to local success stories, like The Breakfast Faktory, as examples of how unique concepts can thrive in Maple Heights.
With more than 9,000 existing housing units and 300 new ones underway, the Mayor emphasized that Maple Heights is full of potential customers. Her message to small business owners was clear: think creatively, meet community needs, and take advantage of the city’s strong market.
The forum took place on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, at the Maple Heights Library, and covered funding options, working with the government, and practical tips to help small businesses grow. A Panel of business experts was on hand to introduce their services and answer questions. The Panel included:
- Clark Bihag, Deputy District Director, Ohio District Office, U.S. Small Business Administration, Moderator
- Steve Petti, Executive Director, Cuyahoga East Chamber of Commerce
- Keri Zipay: Senior Director, Business Development, Team NEO
- Kristin Beynon: Director of Client Engagement for MAGNET
- Jo Madison, MSM, CBA, SBDC Director, Urban League of Greater Cleveland
- Terry Bolden, District Director, U.S. Small Business Administration
